The Comrade
1901–1905

We present here scans made of all issues of The Comrade from the Greenwood Reprint of this publication, from a volume held by U.C. Davis. We also present here scans of The Comrade’s last two volumes, Volume 3 and Volume 4, made by Google for Hathi Trust from original issues of The Comrade held at Princeton University. These include color images of the covers.

Introduction

Launched in 1901, during the first year of the Socialist Party, The Comrade [1901 - 1905] is viewed by many as the most significant forerunner (some describe it as a "pale" forerunner) of The Masses [1911-1917]. Both are distinguished by the a commitment to present socialist art and literature along with socialist politics. The Comrade was published in New York City.

The Comrade printed utopian fantasies as well as revolutionary propaganda (notes Rebels in Bohemia / The Radicals of The Masses by Leslie Fishbein), and included works by Heinrich Heine, Edward Markham, Jack London, Horace Traubel, William Morris, Edward Carpenter, Maxim Gorky, Leo Tolstoy, Upton Sinclair, and Eugene Debs.

International Socialist Review began in 1901 also, but its character was a bit dry and stale until Charle H. Kerr fired its original editor (Algie M. Simons) in 1908 and transformed International Socialist Review into a much more lively and visually interesting publication. "The Comrade" can, thus, also in a way be considered to be a "predecessor" of the later incarnation of International Socialist Review. Note the firing of Simons was primarily due to political differences, not over the format of ISR. But Kerr's takeover of ISR's editorship did also result in its format becoming more lively.

Archivist's Note:

We present here scans made of all issues of The Comrade by the Riazanov Library digital archive project from the Greenwood Reprint of this publication, from a volume held by U.C. Davis. Scanned 600 dpi 8 bit gray scale and/or at 1200 dpi single bit BW. Text is scanned at 600 dpi single bit BW, as is some of the line drawn art. Below that we present scans of The Comrade's last two volumes, Volume 3 and Volume 4, made by Google for Hathi Trust from original issues of The Comrade held at Princeton University. The resolution they used is 350 dpi, and most of this is in 8 bit gray scale. Significantly, some of the covers in this section are rendered in 350 dpi 24 bit color.
